News from The Arthur Holt Library

It has been a busy week for The Arthur Holt Library! Not only have the Library Team been excitedly preparing for the return to face-to-face learning, but our Teaching Team have been delivering referencing lessons to the Year 12 Sports Science students and continuing their work with those Year 10 boys who elected to undertake an independent research project this term.

The Year 12 Sports Science students are currently working on their internal assessments and extended essays, so it was the perfect time to give them a refresher on the importance of referencing their work. Not only does good referencing protect them from accusations of plagiarisms, it also allows them to make all the work that they’ve done behind the scenes visible in their finished essays. Markers will use their reference lists to check that they have read widely enough and been able to draw from reputable sources.

Year 10 are still in the early stages of the research process. Last week, we walked them through some brainstorming activities and helped them to focus their topic ideas. This week, we helped them to identify where they needed more information and got them started on some preliminary research. We’ve been beyond impressed by some of the boys ideas: everything from the effects of lockdown on mental health to the development of sustainable milk.

Next week is, of course, our final week in remote mode. So now might be a good time to start gathering together any library books that you may have borrowed way back when we were last at school. You will be able to return them to us from October 25, the first day back. We are very much looking forward to seeing you all!

“The best moments in reading are when you come across something – a thought, a feeling, a way of looking at things – which you had thought special and particular to you. Now here it is, set down by someone else, a person you have never met, someone even who is long dead. And it is as if a hand has come out and taken yours.”
