The music is not in the notes, but in the silence between

― Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart

At the recent Junior School assembly, we were entertained by Geoffrey O (6Yo), who played Ballade Pour Adeline by Paul De Sennesville on the Piano. He has been learning with Mrs Welsh for 3 years. Geoffrey sings in the Junior School Choir. His sports of choice are soccer and basketball, but he also likes debating and playing handball at recces and lunch. This year Geoffrey’s goal is attain an AMEB Grade 5 piano certificate. He says, “I like that the piano has lots of variety and how you can play many different genres of music on it”.

Introducing Mr Ryan – TGS Oboe Teacher

Mr Ryan has been teaching at the Summer Hill campus since 2019 and starting teaching at the Strathfield campus in Term 2. His musical journey started in the choir and he played clarinet, piano, saxophone, viola and oboe. He took up the oboe in Year 4. Mr Ryan’s most memorable experience of playing the Oboe was at the Australian Youth Orchestra and the Queensland Arts Festival. More recently he played with the Royal Scottish National Orchestra and Opera Australia Orchestra. He says, “What I like about the Oboe is it’s a bit unusual and it has a very distinctive tone”. Mr Ryan started teaching as soon as he finished high school until he moved to Europe to study the Oboe. He began teaching again in 2014.

We asked him “Do you still practise playing the instrument every day?” Unsurprisingly, he answered, “Yes! We all have to keep up regular practice.”

Mr Ryan still performs professionally. Most recently, he finished a season at Handa Opera on Sydney Harbour, which was 30 performances. Quoting from Opera Australia’s website, “We present… La Traviata: the story that inspired Moulin Rouge. The 3.5-tonne chandelier sparkles with 10,000 crystals. The biggest scenes feature 70 performers on stage and party boats in the harbour. Verdi’s score offers flying melodies, rousing drinking songs and heartbreaking duets. Brian Castles-Onion conducts the opera, with a live orchestra hidden under the stage.

Mr Ryan’s response to our final question was, “It will be wonderful to travel again and go on tour both around and outside Australia.”
