Library News | Junior School

November is Picture Book Month. You might be tempted to believe that Picture Books are only intended for young readers, but this is not true. Picture books are for everybody.

Many are very funny and some are really quite serious. They all have beautiful illustrations.  Many of these books are also great for reading aloud and sharing with other people.

Top 10 Picture Books

Here’s a list of ten fabulous Picture books. It’s hard to choose just ten, because there are so many beautiful Picture books to choose from in the Library. Some are classics and some have been published more recently.

Have you read these 10 books?  What are your top ten Picture books?

  1. Possum Magic by Mem Fox
  2. Stick Man by Julia Donaldson
  3. Green Eggs and Ham by Dr Seuss
  4. How to Make a Bird by Meg McKinlay
  5. The Incredible Book Eating Boy by Oliver Jeffers
  6. The Day the Crayons Quit by Drew Daywalt and illustrated by Oliver Jeffers
  7. Too much stuff! by Emily Gravett
  8. I Want My Hat Back by Jon Klassen
  9. Mopoke by Philip Bunting
  10. The Arrival by Shaun Tan

Possum Magic by Mem Fox is an Australian classic.

Stick Man is a great book for Dad to read aloud to the family.

How to Make a Bird is this year’s winner of the Children’s Book Council of Australia award for best new book.

Oliver Jeffers is a great writer and illustrator, and The Incredible Book Eating Boy is a quirky story about ‘absorbing’ books as well as a terrific example of his unique illustrations.

And to prove the point that Picture books are for older reader’s too, Shaun Tan’s book The Arrival makes the list. This exploration of the migrant experience is told entirely in pictures.

Finally, for anyone who’s ever worried about their stuff, there is: Too Much Stuff.
