Basketball News

It’s been a very different start to the summer season, which is expected under the circumstances. Normally we would have finished the first round of games of the CAS season. The boys have been going through plenty of training sessions over the last four weeks and the majority of teams look forward to taking on Waverley in a trial this coming Saturday with Trinity hosting the 2022 Year 9 and 10s, while the Opens (1sts – 8ths) and 2022 Year 8s (8A – 8G), will be heading to Waverley College. Incredibly, the Opens Basketball ranks will go right down to the 14ths in the CAS season and this Saturday they will play internals (9ths – 14ths) in the Old Gym.

1st V Squad Trial vs. St. Patrick’s College

“A very young and inexperienced Trinity Squad down St. Pat’s in the final seconds.”

Trinity finally were able to get out and see how they looked after weeks of practice against a very solid St. Pat’s team. With a number of players missing through injury or away at the delayed Field Studies Camp, it gave the Coaching Staff a chance to look at some boys who will be fighting for spots on the 2022 1st V Team. Led by last season’s premiership 1sts players, Trinity jumped out to an early lead with trademark relentless defensive pressure. James A. (11WH) provided the offensive spark and Anson Z. (11Ke) chimed in at the end of the quarter to give the Greens a small lead at the first break (17-14). In the second period, Trinity as expected struggled at times, as new players to the squad were rotated into the game and getting used to the fast pace of 1sts basketball. It was great to see Ollie S. (10Ar) back on the floor after two seasons of battles with injury. Ollie had the hot hand for a period scoring eight points straight, which included a couple of big ‘3s’ off good drive and kick basketball. A late charge from St. Pat’s gave them the edge into the halftime break (53-54).

It was dourer and scrappy in the third quarter for both Schools who found it hard to find any consistency on the offensive end with only a ‘3’ from James A. (11La) the shining light. St. Pat’s managed to hold the advantage by three points (38-41) heading into the last ten minute block. Youngsters Will C. (9La) and Ethan M. (8Ho) combined for six points in the paint area, but two deep ‘3s’ from St. Pat’s had Trinity down five points with just two minutes remaining. Trinity remained composed and senior players Arthur and Andrews combined for the last eight points. On the back of team defence Trinity forced a turnover and Andrews raced away to give the Greens the single point victory (54-53).

2nd V Squad Trial vs TGS intra-Squad

With no external game for the 2nds, the Coach staff put together an Intra-Squad with a mix of up and coming ballers and some boys who are on the edge of breaking into the 2nds Squad. In a solid contest the Intra-Squad challenged their older counterparts before the seconds took control in the third quarter to go on and win the game by 15 points (49-34). A late flurry of baskets from Adam T. (10Mu) saw him lead all scorers with 12 points and Sam P. (10WJ) was the Seconds best with 11 points and solid game leading the group: A group with injuries and some boys trialling in the 1sts. The only returning 2021 premiership player was Matt D. (11Sc) who was the rock at both ends and provided solid leadership for the inexperienced group. Other highlights were some big shots from downtown in the third and fourth quarter from Felix Leckie (11La) and Eden Taouk (11WJ).  The 2nds look forward to playing against a rival School this week and a chance to improve as collective group.

“Three young Trinitarians get selected in NSW D-League Teams.”

Congratulations to Peter T. (9WH), Jed M. (9WJ) and Myles B. (8WJ) who were selected in the U16 Metropolitan D-League Teams, which consists of the top 20 players in the metropolitan area. This is a positive step for these boys as they look to stake claims for selection in the 2022 NSW under 16 Metro Team.
